Som Central, Maria de la Salut
It's inevitable that when most of think of Mallorca the image conjured up is of holiday resorts, beaches, the sea and roasting hot weather. All totally true, and absolutely fantastic if you want a break lounging on a beach away from the stresses of life, work and the dreadful weather, and I should know, I used to be an accountant in Manchester!
Well, the flipside to this image of Mallorca, its yin to its yang, is that winter on the island is also a great stress reliever too, and you get to see how lovely the island is with its bright winter coat of many colours on.
Touring the almost empty roads is easy, driving's a pleasure, you can see all the places that are jam packed in summer and all the best restaurants are still open! Normally the weather is quite dry, sunny, and warm enough not to need a coat in the day time but just chilly enough at night to wrap up and sit out on the terrace of a bar with a heater to enjoy a leisurely pre or post prandial drink.
The even better thing about Mallorca Winters is that lots and lots of hotels – mainly in the interior – are still open and are so economically priced. Here's one I picked, almost at random, from our hotel booking section that will set you back an incredible £158 for a three night stay in mid December.
It's the Som Central in Maria de la Salut on the Es Pla central plain of Mallorca – a fertile agricultural area with mile upon mile of rolling countryside dotted with sheep, farms, vineyards, and criss crossed by the narrow roads to the towns of Sineu, Ariany, Petra, and Santa Margalida.
It's an ideal area to tour with many local markets, landmarks and never far away from the coast or mountains – I really love this area. The 4 Star Som Central Hotel is right in the centre of Maria in a completely renovated 18th century manor house with all mod cons yet retaining many of the old features of the original building.
It only has 9 rooms, so personal service is guaranteed, and its Melassa restaurant serves up local and international cuisine using seasonal and zero kilometre products. It's an ideal base for a break in the countryside whether you're driving or wanting to do some hiking, biking or riding in this beautiful flat area.
If the photos tempt you, have a look at the Som Central's information page here on Spotlight where you can book online.
