Fornalutx – still pretty

Prettiest villages in Spain

Fornalutx, one of Mallorca's beautiful mountain villages, is still considered to be one of the prettiest villages in all Spain. It's part of a growing association, which now numbers 79, of Spain's most attractive – dare we say instagrammable – small towns from all across the country.

Membership of the association is earned by passing a series of stringent tests based on the following criteria; the town or villages must have a population of under 15,000, they must have a historic town centre in perfect condition and have a certified architectural and natural heritage.

Once over this hurdle, towns like Fornalutx are then subject to a quality audit, not only to gain admission to the hallowed association, but to remain in it on an annual basis. Commission staff check on aspects like cleaning, maintenance of facades, traffic circulation, parking facilities, care of greenery and garden areas, and the treatment of billboards and posters – all the things that give a town just that something special.

If you've paid a visit to Fornalutx you'll know why it is included once again in the list of prettiest villages – it's stunningly beautiful, small but perfectly formed and has a lovely atmosphere in a perfect setting. In summer it's the perfect place to while away time in the small square and in winter when the mountains are covered in snow it's even more stunning.

As I said, there are now 79 villages in the association, 11 more than last year, and Fornalutx is the only one in the Balearic Islands. I've been to a good few of them, and can safely say that our little Mallorcan Jewel compares favourably with them all.

You can study a map and photos of all the villages on the pueblos más bonitos de España website.
