Spain's hot hundred restaurants

La Vieja de Jonay Hernandez

Users of the 'El Tenedor' (The Fork) restaurant booking and review site recently decided that no less than seven of Spain's top 100 restaurants were located right here in Mallorca. In case you missed my last article about it, here they are; Ca n'Ignasi (Inca), Mesón La Rueda (Palma), Adrián Quetglas (Palma), Vandal Palma (Palma), S'Hort (Palma), La Vieja de Jonay Hernández (Palma) and Katagi Blau (Palma).

Today I'm featuring a newish – opened in May 2018 – restaurant that has been garnering lots of praise in all the right circles from industry professionals, instagram influencers and Joe public alike. It's La Vieja de Jonay Hernandez, tucked away in an 'off the beaten tourist track' location in one of Palma's up and coming BoHo chic squares.

It's the brainchild and labour of love of Jonay Hernandez a young Canarian chef who's been based in Mallorca for many years whose dream was to open a restaurant bringing the best of the Canaries to the Balearics. Homemade flavours such as mojo picón or wrinkled potatoes combine with local Balearic products and a KM zero sourcing policy to produces dishes full of surprises, flavours and delicious healthy textures.

It's relaxed food in a relaxed informal atmosphere, like spending an afternoon or evening with friends. There's a whole range of imaginative tapas (link to menu) throughout the day, with dishes for solo diners or sharing plates – it's much more fun – for two. You can also get a three course menu del dia for less than €14 or take it away for less than €10!

La Vieja's relaxed friendly style and urban décor, its young enthusiastic team – they have matching t-shirts and aprons – make it a firm favourite with a younger clientele and its presence on the square has helped to breathe life back into an older area of the city.

Why not give it a try when you're in Palma next and, as Jonay says, “add colour to your routine.”
