August is Jazz Month

Sa Pobla Jazz Fest 25

Catherine Russell

Starting tonight, it's the Sa Pobla Jazz Festival which returns to the main square of the little town for the 25th time since 1995. It's a free festival (apart from one concert this year) which is so much more than a few gigs.

Yes, there are 4 main concerts, but there's a show on every night in the town's Plaza Mayor featuring some of the best local Jazz acts from the island (and nearby) as well as workshops for budding musicians and vocalists. Better still, the local restaurants around the town are putting on special menus for the event which they've named Menjazz (a portmanteau of menjar and jazz, ie eat jazz)

As I said, it starts tonight at 22:30 with a concert by Cyrille Aimee, a young French Jazz vocalist and guitarist who is a former winner of the Montreux Jazz Voice competition.

On 6th August, Catherine Russell (photo) is the star turn. She has a rich Jazz heritage as her father was Louis Armstrong's musical director and she sang on the Boardwalk Empire soundtrack.

The Glissando Big Band appear on 13th August, an 18 piece combo which is 100% Mallorcan which is unique on the island.

Finally on 19th August at the Plaza Alexandre Ballester, you can catch a fabulous show from Mariola Membrives who fuses Jazz and Flamenco performing the songs of the Spanish poet Lorca, who was executed in the Spanish Civil War.
