The photographer of the stars

Sam Shaw exhibition

marilyn monroe by sam shaw

An exhibition of the fantastic photographic work of Sam Shaw who made his name taking monochrome images of a galaxy of stars – Hollywood stars – has just opened in Palma.

Called 'The photographer of the stars,' it's housed over four floors of the city's Misericordia cultural centre and is a cornucopia of both glamour and the gritty reality of life in the USA in the glory years of Hollywood.

New Yorker Shaw took some of the most famous photographs of some of the most famous people in the world at the time. Who can not know the fabulous shot of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt flying round her waist in The Seven Year Itch?

Well that's in the exhibition, along with many other Marilyns, occupying the whole ground floor of the Misericordia. Above on the first floor you'll find a record of Shaw's work as a film producer, for example Paris Blues with Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier, and on the second floor Shaw's photos of cine-icons like Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Woody Allen and Warren Beatty. Finally, on the third floor, his photo-journalistic work as a documenter of American life in the 40's is featured.

I was really hard pressed to select just a couple of photos (Licensed by Shaw Family Archives, Private Collection) to illustrate Shaw's work, but they're enough to demonstrate just how accomplished he was and if you want to see them, here's all you need to know;
