Spanish football history will be made in RCD Mallorca's Son Moix stadium on Saturday night when the team play their first match back in the first division of La Liga Santander (photo) after years languishing in lower leagues.
However, that's a small piece of history compared to the earth shattering news that for the first time ever, a top level match in Spain will be refereed by a female!
Starting on Saturday, 17th August at 8 pm, Guadalupe Porras Ayuso will control the match against Eibar, a small town team from the Basque Country who punch above their weight in the footballing world.
Guadalupe will be able to wear the yellow ref's jersey after passing some stringent physical tests set by the Royal Spanish Football Federation that all would-be refs – male and female – must pass to prove that they have the stamina to last 90 minutes on the pitch.
It should be an interesting 'spectacle' and let's hope Ms Porras remembers to bring hers to catch any foul play from either side. Interested in football, but aren't in Mallorca for this match? Here are RCD Mallorca's home fixtures for the season – click the link.
