Hats & Horses
Could there be anything more quintessentially British than the annual Royal Ascot race meeting. It has it all; royalty, tradition, elegance, style, champagne, Pimms, and a strict dress code, all combined with the sport of kings!
So Brits on holiday in Mallorca taking a break from their country estates and stately homes will be in their element on October 26th when the spirit and glamour of Ascot comes to Palma.
The event Hats & Horses which originated in the most British of the Balearics, Menorca, will take place at the Son Pardo trotting track on the outskirts of Palma, giving everybody a chance to put on their most elegant garb for a day at the races.
The date has been fixed to encourage visitors outside the main tourist season and also, as heat is the enemy of style, to wear some really stylish clothing. There is a dress code – suggested rather than obligatory – cocktail dresses, hats and fascinators for the ladies, and blazers or suits, and hats for the gentlemen!
It all starts at 11am in the specially decorated track with dressage and jumping exhibitions and other horsey activities, and the trotting races and betting start at 4pm. During the day makeup and hairstyling services will be available and if you want to get ahead, but haven't got a hat, you can actually hire one for the duration. To top it all off, there'll be live music, and prizes for the best 'looks' from the racegoers.
If you wish to attend it's absolutely free to enter and you'll only have to pay for your bets, magnums of champagne, top hat hire and a quick application of foundation and blusher or you can buy a VIP package for €70 which gets you meals and drinks at the hippodrome throughout the event.
