Musical culture – always!
The demise of the much loved Jazz Voyeur Club may have deprived Palma of one of its best live music venues, but do not despair, because there are other places where you can hear some of the best musicians from all over Mallorca practice their craft live.
In the hip and happening barrio of Santa Catalina, the former fisherman's quarter and now home to dozens of bars, cafes and restaurants is also the location of a great live music venue. The Novo Cafe Lisboa, soon to celebrate its 7th anniversary, has become a firm and popular fixture on the live music scene in the city.
With 'an unequalled cultural offer' of open mic and jam sessions of Jazz, Blues, Groove/Funk, Latin Jazz, and concerts by Pop, Indie, Rock, and Psychedelia artists as well as exhibitions and theatrical performances it has just a little bit more to offer than the typical holiday entertainment of somebody warbling away like Neil Diamond by your hotel pool!
Some events have an entry fee but one of the best nights to visit is Thursday, when there's a good ol' Jam session which is free to get in. Hosted by Pep Lluis Garcia, the drummer and percussionist of local Jazz Funkers, Highlands Project, these Novojam sessions attract some of Mallorca's best musicians playing some fine Groove/Latin/Jazz.
Starting at 21:30, you can tap your feet to the music, take in a couple of de-stressing cocktails, and nibble on a pincho or three at only €1.50 each.
Sounds like my perfect night. How about you?
Novo Cafe Lisboa is at Carrer Sant Magí, 33. Santa Catalina, Palma.
