Pro cycling's first run out
If longevity proves an event's popularity then the 29th (that's XXIX in Latin) annual Playa de Palma Mallorca Cycling Challenge makes this race extremely popular and well attended by participants and spectators alike.
Despite a somewhat misleading title these days, as the challenge takes in pretty well all of Mallorca and not just the beach resort east of Palma that's popular with the Germans. And it's a challenge that attracts pro cycling teams from all over Europe and other bits of the world as the first UCI professional event of the year.
Some 25 teams (so far) will be competing this year at the four day event which starts on 30th January and takes in some breathtaking scenery and well known land-marks along its more than 600 kms routes.
So, if you want to go and see the lycra lads in action, or merely want to avoid the road closures along the way, here are the dates of the four days' trophies.
30/01 TROFEO SES SALINES – CAMPOS – PORRERES – PUIG DE SANT SALVADOR (FELANITX) 170 Km
31/01 TROFEO ANDRATX – LLOSETA 169 Km
01/02 TROFEO SERRA DE TRAMUNTANA. SÓLLER – DEIÀ 140 km
02/02 TROFEO PLAYA DE PALMA – PALMA 16 km
If you are really interested, but can't make it 'live' there is usually plenty of TV coverage of the Challenge on the local and national Spanish channels.
You can get all the information you need on the official website.
