Palma Opera season 34

Opening party

carmen 70's style

There's a free show at Palma's Principal Theatre this Friday 24th January at 21.30. The 90 minute spectacular is a kind of opening party come tempter for the theatre's 34th Opera season and it's well worth going to.

Imaginatively billed as Loopera, the party/presentation starts with an unbelievable display of 'vertical' dancing from the dance company Delrevés. They have performed in spectacular shows all over the world and specialise in choreography on vertical surfaces and as you can see, it's pretty special!

The rest of the show will be a fusion of classic opera and electronic music combining traditional songs with a modern take with the aid of DJs. This may seem a little – unlike the dancing - off the wall but let me tell you that the three Operas in this year's programme are all contemporary styled versions of the originals.

Carmen is set in 1970's Spain and for all the world looks like the set of Grease in the publicity photo above. Lucia di Lammermoor is set in the turbulent aftermath of WW2 and Mozart's Magic Flute, though a fairytale has much modern day philosophy in this version.

Here are the dates

Carmen: 1st, 4th, 6th and 8th of March 2020

Lucia di Lammermoor: 26th and 29th of April; 1st and 3rd of May 2020

The magic flute: 10th, 12th and 14th of June 2020
