Nick Lowe plays Alcudia

Headmaster of British Rock

If you're of a certain age and disposition, just like moi, you'll be interested to hear that one of the grand old men of the British rock scene will be playing a one off concert in Alcudia this year. Producer, singer, songwriter, and one of the mainstays of the Stiff record label in the 70's, Nick Lowe, will be performing at the Alcudia Auditorium on the 3rd June.

Thanks to Wikipedia my memory (it's a 'certain age' thing) has been jogged that Lowe played bass with pub rock bands Brinsley Schwartz and Dave Edmund's Rockpile and was chief songwriter for the two, penning the hit "I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock ’n’ Roll)" for the latter.

Lowe's main commercial successes came later as a solo artist and producer with hits like "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" and "Cruel to Be Kind." he also produced Elvis Costello's first five albums, wrote "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" for Costello, “Milk and Alcohol,” for Dr Feelgood and produced “Stop your Sobbing” for the Pretenders.

Phew, that's some pedigree! However, despite this Lowe, now a grey haired 70 year-old, says that he wanted to move on completely from what he did when he was young, thin and famous and not just turn into a jowly old geezer churning out his old hits.

These days, according to Rock critic Jim Farber, he's “moved into the role of a worldly balladeer, specialising in grave vocals and graceful tunes. Lowe's four most recent solo albums mine the wealth of American roots music, drawing on vintage country, soul and R&B to create an elegant mix of his own."

If you'd like to see Nick Lowe at the Auditorium, it's in the centre of Alcudia town (not the resort) and tickets can be bought online for €25 early bird price, or €30 thereafter. Click the link – Alcudia Auditorium.
