Traditional cuisine in Soller...Read more
The entrance to Soller couldn't be more dramatic. Whether by train or by road you leave the flatlands of Palma behind, enter the longest tunnel on Majorca and pop out the other side to a hidden valley with sweeping orange groves.
It's all a bit 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe;' as you step through to another world. Soller is a town built on oranges. Thanks to good old Louis XIV, who would only eat Soller oranges, the town prospered, hence the railway used to transport them.
It's like no other town in Mallorca; much of the architecture is modernist, there's an imposing Neo Gothic church and an old narrow gauge wooden tram runs through the town to the picturesque holiday resort of Puerto Soller.
Soller has a whole street (Calle Luna) dedicated to shops, bars and restaurants, along with a lively indoor market but the square is the place to sit in summer; waving at the tram passengers as it slowly ambles along is a great pastime. Whilst warm evenings dining on tapas and watching the world go by is the perfect 'wind down' after a hard day hiking or sightseeing.
In winter it's the perfect base for walkers as there's a plethora of well signed hiking routes and there isn't the seasonality that you often get with coastal resorts. Plus with Puerto Soller within easy reach you get two for the price of one!
Spotlight Tip: nip in to the art gallery at the train station to see a fab selection of ceramics and paintings by Picasso and Miro.
