Mercat 1930

Palma's seafront gastromarket

Palma's second gastromarket, Mercat 1930, will open today on the city's seafront Paseo Maritimo in the premises of the Gran Hotel Mediterráneo. It joins the Mercado San Juan, located in the north of the city in the old slaughterhouse building, as a purveyor of great food in relaxed surroundings.

If you're not familiar with the gastromarket concept then you'll need to take a trip down there, because the idea is that you pick and choose your food and drink from different stalls in the hall, take it back to your table in the centre and graze the evening away.

It's a friendly, sociable way to dine and is absolutely perfect for friends or families who all like different foods. Everything is under the same roof, and with a choice of stalls selling sushi, Thai food, mini-burgers, desserts, ice-cream, oysters, fried fish, tortillas and more there's a great choice.

Dishes are small and quickly prepared so waiting time is minimal and there's a choice of three bars selling vermouth – the drink that's so a la mode at the moment – premium beers from around the world, and cocktails!

The plan of the market's owners is to give the area – known for it's late night life and discos – a bit of a boost earlier in the day and encourage more people to the area. It will be open every day from 12 to midnight and its opening has created another 65 permanent jobs in the city.

I can't wait to have a look as it has been designed and styled with an Art Deco theme to match it's 1930 moniker. See you all down there?
