Food, drinks, and music - on the rocks

I really struggled with that headline because Varadero is not just a restaurant; it's a bar, cafe, restaurant, music venue and all round stylish place to hang out and relax by day or night. Open from 8 am – yes 8 o'clock in the morning! - and until the wee small hours it's perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, cocktails, aperitifs, dinner and late night snifters.

Varadero – it means slipway – really is on the rocks, the rocks of the breakwater at the end of a long (almost) causeway down to the boatyards in Palma port. Its position means that it has views over the sea of Palma cathedral, spectacularly illuminated at night, the twinkling lights of the city and the blood red sunsets that the Balearics are famous for.

If you're strolling down there, the walk is quite a long one, but well worth it. Surprisingly for a 'Sunset' venue and contrasting with its Ibiza cousins, the prices in the restaurant are completely normal – around €18 for a bottle of wine, €12 for a starter and €22 for a fish main course – and well within the range of my wallet.

It's a popular place with all age groups and the live music policy certainly reflects this with nightly performances from artists playing Jazz, Soul, Bossa, Fusion and Swing as the sun goes down with the occasional nod to Ibiza with a chill out DJ on the decks.

I've only ever been in the daytime, mid-morning to be exact, so I can say with some conviction that the coffee is good! So, if you're looking for a stylish place to relax, take in some views, music and the sunset, Varadero is for you. Let me know if you liked it.
